Throughput by case packing system
These are rates measured on installations we have delivered. The final speed depends on the case format, the product and the number of infeed lines, so every project is sized individually.
| Case packing system | Format | Throughput | Sector |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wraparound case packer | Various canned formats | Up to 18 cases/min | Canning |
| Top load with lid | Bags in case with lid | 12 cases/min | Food |
| Top load | American case | 6 cases/min | Chemicals / various |
| Side load | B1 case | 5 cases/min | Industrial |
What throughput does my line need?
Throughput is not set by the robot, it is set by the product and the case format.
A wraparound reaches the highest rates because it forms the case around the product once it has been grouped. Top load — a pick and place robot that picks the product and sets it in the case — is more flexible with fragile products or products whose orientation varies, and side load works better when the product goes in lying down.
For production with several parallel lines we use spider robots and machine vision, so that one system serves two lines at the same time.
Case packing bottles, jerrycans, cans and containers
Rigid containers — glass or PET bottles, jerrycans, cans, jars — look like the easy case and are not. The product does not deform, but loose it will not stand up: it arrives from the filler in no particular order, and it has to be grouped, oriented and detected before it goes into the case. That is where the throughput is won or lost, not at the robot.
That is why, on bottling lines, the design starts with the infeed system:
- Grouping and upstream detection. We have designed jerrycan grouping and detection systems that order the product and verify the formation is correct before case packing. When empty containers arrive palletized from the supplier, the line starts earlier still, with a container depalletizer.
- Wraparound for high throughput. It is the system that works best with rigid containers already grouped, because it forms the case around the product instead of inserting the product into the case. In canning we reach up to 18 cases/min.
- Top load when the container is delicate or the orientation varies. Throughput drops slightly and control over the product improves.
- Tray or tray wraparound when the output format is a display tray or half case.
The gripper and the grouping system are designed around the specific container: a one-litre glass bottle is not a pack of cans and is not a jerrycan with a handle. Tell us what container you handle and what throughput your line needs.
From empty pallet to full pallet: both ends of the line
Most projects start with one specific machine. But case packing is not an island, and when you look at the whole line something comes up that almost nobody raises: the container’s entire journey can be automated end to end.
Here is how it fits together:
- The empty containers are depalletized. They arrive on a pallet and have to be separated and put in line.
- They go into the filling line — which is yours, and your process.
- End of line: case packing, tray packing, or whatever format the product calls for.
- Palletizing of the finished product.
Look at what that means: the product goes in empty on one pallet and comes out full on another, without anyone handling it by hand, except during filling, which is yours.
We do both ends. We do not sell the filling line and we do not touch it: we solve what happens before and what happens after — which tends to be exactly where the people and the bottlenecks pile up.
And there is a practical advantage you notice on site: a single point of contact for the start and the end of the line, with the same design thinking at both ends.
